Wax is a natural material produced by the ear canal that helps save against debris, dirt, and bacteria. For most people, the wax naturally makes its way out of the ear canal. For some people, wax can block the ear canal. This can occur because of the anatomy of the ear, after trauma to the ear canal skin, or after infections. Using cotton buds, in the hearing aids or headphones can also push wax deeper into the ear.
Microsuction is the safest way of removing wax from the ear and is safe in kids of all ages. The procedure is fast and simple and takes just a few minutes to perform. It can even be performed in people with eardrum perforations or active infections. Microsuction involves using a soft vacuum sucker in the ear whilst looking into the ear with some type of magnification, most generally a microscope. The doctor will describe to your kid that it can be pretty noisy and occasionally ticklish but only extremely rarely is it uncomfortable. Some kids may experience a pretty feeling of dizziness for a little period during and after the procedure but this generally passes quickly. Occasionally some kids may experience transient tinnitus but this get better for most people fairly fast.

· Variable hearing loss within the last thirty days
· Recent perforations within the last ninety days
· Discharging ears where the discharge contains blood
· An inability to grip the head still (e.g. uncontrollable shaking)

From time to time ear wax can build up. The Ear canal produces skin which can trap migrating ear wax. Hence a snow ball effect of build up.

Microsuction is the safest most preferred technique to remove ear wax. It’s used in hospital by ENT departments to draw out wax from the canal by gentle vacuum.
Prior to removal it’s a good idea to use olive oil drops 2 to 3 drops before bedtime 3 days before Microsuction.
Depending on how soft the ear wax is it can take between 10 to 15 minutes per side.
